Abstract: In the last decades many processes have been developed ending in constructive applications of explosives and shock waves. It got started with explosive forming of sheet metal in the sixties of last century. Then shortly after explosive welding phenomenom was discovered, allowing bonding of dissimilar metals. Today this is a fabrication, important to industry.
Then the direct use of high pressure of detonating explosives was leading to explosive compaction of powders, an area with prospective development possibilities of new materials with special properties.
There are also the methods of explosive hardening and explosive residual stress relief and of explosive cutting. These methods should be further developed both from fundamental and application related standpoint.
But the most fruitful application is the direct introduction of shock waves to human body. This was leading to kidney stone lithotripsy, already well established in hospitals. Still further medical treatments by shock waves are on the way. The advantages/disadvantages of these explosive procedures are discussed and also desirable and in future necessary developments mentioned.

Abstract: Explosive Compaction as a new route to manufacture Nanocrystalline Materials allows:
1) To obtain green compacts with high density, approximately 100% of theoretical.
2) Therefore, subsequent sinter treatment can be performed at lower sinter temperature and/or at shorter duration.
3) Grain growth, therefore, is much less than usual: the nanocrystalline properties can be maintained in the solid made of nanocrystalline powder.

The current presentation shows that using this routeallows to obtain full density compacts of alumina with new properties. Explosive compaction allows to obtain full density alumina at pressures of 9 GPa. As grain growth during compaction is low, grain size can be preserved below wave length of light. The sample therefore is transparent. As during explosive compaction a transformation of the crystalline state in nano- alumina is taking place, the process can be called transformation induced compaction.

Rolf Prummer was born in 1937 in Ludwigsburg, Germany. He received a degree in Physics from the University of Stuttgart and began his dissertation at the Max Planck Institute of Stuttgart in 1964 which was completed in 1967 at the University of Karlsruhe, where he also completed his “Habilitationsschrift”, entitled “Explosive Compaction of Powdered Substances” in 1985,published in a book of the same title in 1987 by Springer Verlag. Professor Prummer has been associated with several Fraunhofer Institutes. He has lectured at Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, in Novosibirsk, Russia, in Mongolia; and is now a professor at the University of Karlsruhe. He has published more than 150 papers and has developed more than 20 patents. The patent-related work has involved explosive welding, forming, cutting, hardening as well as extensive research dealing with explosive compaction of powders. Professor Prummer has traveled and lectured extensively, and has interacted with colleagues world-wide.
