The 12th edition of BSSM’s International Conference on Advances in Experimental Mechanics (www.bssm.org/conf2017) will be held in Sheffield on August 29-31, 2017. The conference is organized by the University of Sheffield, which is celebrating the centenary of the Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2017. It is a small, informal conference that will bring together internationally leading researchers to exchange ideas and discuss new research. Note that the session topics and chairs have been selected by the organizing committee to ensure a coherence scientific program on experimental mechanics.

As part of the conference program, I will organize a session on “Strain at the Micron-Scale”:

The development of advanced materials by fine-tuning their microstructure to achieve superior mechanical properties, requires mechanical testing at micro- or nano-scale. To this end, key challenges in micro- and nano-mechanical testing and real-time (microscopic) visualization need to be addressed, including (i) precise and well-controlled loading of the specimens (tension, compression, bending, fracture, fatigue…), (ii) measurement of minute applied loads and deformations, (iii) integration with in-situ visualization capabilities (LM, SEM, TEM, XRD,…), and (iv) advancement of (integrated) digital image correlation (DIC) techniques. This session provides a forum to present and discuss recent research developments in micro- and nano-scale test methods, mechanical size effects, mechanics of micro-systems, and materials design at the micron-scale.

I welcome you at this session on Strain at the Micron-Scale, and encourage you to forward this email to all colleagues, post-docs, and graduate students who may have interest in this session.

The deadline for abstract submission for BSSM12 is Januari 30th, 2017. For abstract submission just follow this link. There will be no printed proceedings, so you can safely present fresh (not yet published) results.
